In his State of the State address, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee announced his plan to pursue a tax on carbon dioxide emissions from fossil-fuel sources. The tax would levy a $20-a-ton price on carbon emissions that would rise over time, raising a total of $3.3 billion over four years. The revenues would go to support clean-energy projects, improve floodwater management and reduce risks of wildfires, and assistance to offset impacts on low-income communities. Several state legislators have come on board in support of the plan and have introduced legislation to make it a reality.
